Rare-earth doped nano-glass-ceramics for extending spectral response of water-splitting semiconductor electrodes by high intense UV-blue up-conversion: turning the sun into blue.

Rare-earth doped nano-glass-ceramics, presenting outstanding high intense UV-blue up-conversion processes, appear as an interesting approach to assist long wavelength light harvesting of solar irradiation, extending the photo-catalytic response to the red and near-infrared region to overcome the drawback of large band-gap materials used in the splitting of water into oxygen and hydrogen in a photo-electrochemical cell. The Hydrogen produced can be storaged and used when needed to feed Fuel Cells, becoming an attractive renewable solution to meet the terawatt carbon-neutral energy demand challenge.

Symmetric and Reversible Solid Oxide Fuel Cells.

In the past few years a novel concept of Solid Oxide Fuel Cells (SOFC) has been developed: the symmetrical Solid Oxide Fuel Cells (SSOFC). In this configuration, the same electrode material is used as anode and cathode. Several state-of-the-art SOFC electrode materials have been tested and optimised to operate in such a novel configuration, as is the case of the lanthanum chromites traditionally used as interconnect materials, lanthanum chromium manganites and strontium titanates generally used as anodes and lanthanum manganites typically used as cathodes. Fuel cell performances of approximately 800 mW cm−2 and 500 mW cm−2 under H2 and CH4 atmospheres have been obtained using some of these materials in symmetric configuration. Moreover, promising performances have also been reported for interconnect-based materials under city gas containing the impurity H2S. An interesting feature of the compositions evaluated is their potential use as symmetrical electrodes for Solid Oxide Electrolysis Cells (SOEC) with efficiencies in the range of the conventional SOEC systems, i.e. LSM-YSZ/YSZ/Ni-YSZ. Hence, they may be considered all-in-one Symmetric and Reversible SOFCs (SR-SOFCs) with significant advantages compared to traditional configurations, regarding both fabrication and maintenance/operation. In this review, we provide an insight into the most common materials tested as symmetrical electrodes for SOFCs and SOECs, electrolytes employed, configurations tested, new fabrication processes and procedures for microstructural engineering.

Engineering of materials for Solid Oxide Fuel Cells and other energy and environmental applications.

The shortage of fossil fuels and global warming have been the driving force for investment and research in new and green technologies. In this context, one of the most promising options for highly efficient production of clean energy are the Solid Oxide Fuel Cells. These devices produce electricity from the combination of a fuel such as hydrogen and an oxidant like oxygen, being water the only by-product. The power and efficiency of these devices can be enhanced, at minimal cost, through the microstructural design of the materials used as components. In this Perspective, several cost-effective procedures of microstructural control of SOFC materials, ranging from "eye-scale" down to the micrometer scale are reviewed. Some of these approaches have shown to produce a 30% efficiency enhancement in SOFC devices and hence, the same or similar improvements may be expected in other energy and environmental-related areas such as: the design and fabrication of supporting material for biofilters, optimised materials for Polymeric Fuel Cells, photocatalysts for removing organic dyes from waste effluents, membranes for gas separation, hydrogen storage, heterogeneous catalysts for biofuels production, high temperature electrolysis, light materials for Solar cells, Li-batteries, microstructural design of exhaust catalyst materials, etc.
